Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC has bought out another MMA promotion. On March 12, news of the reported buyout between Zuffa and Strikeforce started reaching fans of MMA. The amount of the buyout is yet to be disclosed, but the fact that Strikeforce fighters will now have the opportunity to compete at future UFC fight events has already excited many fans of MMA.

It's really not surprising Zuffa bought out yet another MMA promotion. The UFC has been the most successful MMA promotion so far and are largely responsible for the sport's popularity in recent times. The UFC's ability to find and keep the very best MMA fighters in the world has set them apart from the rest of the pack and has been a very important key to their success.

With the UFC's acquisition of Strikeforce, many matchups MMA fans have always wanted to see can finally happen. World class MMA fighters like Alistair Overeem, Gegard Mousasi and Antonio Silva will now have the opportunity to compete against the best fighters in the UFC. Even MMA bad boy Paul Daley might get a second chance with the UFC, thanks to Zuffa's acquisition of the Strikeforce promotion.

While some MMA fans might still find themselves loyal to other fight promotions, the reality is the UFC has already established itself as the dominant brand in the sport, much like the NBA has in basketball. While other promotions will still put on good MMA events, none have the kind of clout the UFC has developed in the sport.

The downside to the acquisition is the fact that Strikeforce has been the only credible opposition to the UFC for quite some time. Now the UFC stands alone at the top of the MMA mountain, and some fans worry that might take away some of their competitive edge. Hopefully the UFC will continue finding ways to improve their brand and not get complacent with their recent successes. After all, the long time success of the sport of MMA might very well depend on the success of the UFC in the long run.
