UFC on Fox Sports 1 Results: ‘The American Gangster’ Emerges Victorious

UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen was one of the most hyped events in recent MMA history, yet the fights exceeded all expectations.

Here are the results of the inaugural UFC on Fox Sports 1 card — also known as UFC Fight Night 26 — held on Aug. 17, at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass:

Chael Sonnen def. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

“The American Gangster” was all business at UFC on Fox Sports 1, putting Rua on his back early on. The Brazilian managed to fight his way back up and take Sonnen down, but he wasn’t able to hold on to top control for long. Sonnen got back on top, working in some shots on the ground before bringing things to an end via guillotine choke with 13 seconds left in the opening round.

After the bout, Sonnen expressed his disdain for Wanderlei Silva.

Travis Browne def. Alistair Overeem

Overeem quickly established himself as the better striker at UFC Fight Night 26, mercilessly punishing Browne with combinations and knees. Browne showed a lot of heart and withstood Alistair’s barrage, and he eventually found “The Demolition Man’s” chin, putting him away with a front kick at 4:08 of round one.

Urijah Faber def. Yuri Alcantara

Alcantara got off to solid start at UFC on Fox Sports 1, controlling the opening minutes of the bantamweight tilt. However, Faber turned things around halfway through the first round, gaining top position and landing several vicious elbows.

“The California Kid” kept it up during the second and third rounds, dominating the very tough Alcantara in impressive fashion.

The final scores were 30-26, 30-26, and 30-27, all in favor of Faber.

Matt Brown def. Mike Pyle

Matt Brown went right to work at UFC Fight Night 26, hurting Pyle with a right hook followed by a knee during the opening moments of their showdown. He followed up with a vicious barrage of punches on the ground, forcing referee Kevin MacDonald to stop fight 29 seconds into the contest.

John Howard def. Uriah Hall

Hall was a 5-1 favorite going into UFC on Fox Sports 1 but Howard apparently didn’t get the memo. He weathered Hall’s aggression during the first round, and he took over the fight during the latter rounds, smothering Hall with his grappling against the cage and constant pressure, while seemingly trying to get into Uriah’s head by repeatedly motioning to touch gloves.

One judge scored the bout 29-28 in Hall’s favor, while the other two gave Howard the nod, scoring the bout 30-27 and 29-28.

Michael Johnson def. Joe Lauzon

Johnson came out swinging at UFC Fight Night 26, hurting Lauzon early and often during the opening round. Lauzon tried to pull off a comeback in the second round, but Johnson refused to back down. Michael mixed in a few takedowns during the final rounds, making sure it was clear who the more dominant fighter was.

The judges scored the fight 30-27, 30-25, and 30-27, all in favor of Johnson.
