UFC on Fox 4 Results, Lyoto Machida Gets Next Title Shot

After putting on an embarrassingly subpar fight card last week, the Ultimate Fighting Championship redeemed itself with a very entertaining “UFC on Fox 4” fight card. Here are the results of the UFC on Fox 4 fight card held on Aug. 4, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif:

Mauricio Rua defeats Brandon Vera

Many MMA fans were expecting the main event of the UFC on Fox 4 fight card to be a Muay Thai contest. But a grappling match broke out in the first round, with “Shogun” getting some solid ground-and-pound done, while Vera came close to finishing the fight with a guillotine fight. Rua displayed his striking in the second round, and he almost finished the bout with a few vicious combinations against the cage. However, Vera displayed a lot of heart, and he finished the round on top, landing a few shots from half guard. Rua went back to his grappling in the third round, and he did more of the same in the fourth, before dropping Vera with a big right. He followed up with a salvo of punches, forcing referee Herb Dean to step in and save “The Truth.”

Lyoto Machida defeats Ryan Bader

Machida displayed his superior striking skills against Bader at UFC on Fox 4, picking him apart with his accurate strikes. Bader carelessly lunged in with a right hook early in the second round, and Machida made him pay with a straight right, sending “Darth” to the canvas. “The Dragon” followed up with a few more punches, forcing referee John McCarthy to stop the bout. Bader never came close to securing a single takedown throughout the fight. With the impressive win, Machida will get a shot at the winner of the Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson matchup.

Joe Lauzon defeats Jamie Varner

This was one of the most entertaining MMA fights I’ve seen in a while. Varner landed some big shots in the first round, rocking Lauzon a few times. His cardio started to fade in the second round, and “J-Lau” capitalized on it, outwrestling Varner, coming close to a few submissions. Varner looked like he was in control early in the third round, but Lauzon turned things around with a beautiful sweep, securing a triangle choke in the process. Varner tapped out moments later. If you missed this fight, you might want to catch the replay.

Mike Swick defeats DaMarques Johnson

Both men came out swinging at UFC on Fox 4, with Johnson getting the better of the striking exchanges. Johnson also got some work done on the ground in the first round, and he came pretty close to finishing the fight with a D’arce choke. However, Swick turned things around early in the second round, catching a leg kick, taking the fight to the ground. He followed up with a big right hand, knocking Johnson out cold.

Nam Phan defeats Cole Miller (split decision)

Wagner Prado vs. Phil Davis (no-contest due to accidental eye poke, round one)

Rani Yahya defeats Josh Grispi (north-south choke, round one)

Philip De Fries defeats Oli Thompson (rear-naked choke, round two)
