On June 7, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will head to the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the UFC Fight Night 42 card.
The event is stacked with intriguing matchups from the main event featuring Benson Henderson and Rustam Khabilov, to Sergio Pettis’ fight against Yaotzin Meza on the preliminary card.
Here are my UFC Fight Night 42 predictions:
Benson Henderson vs. Rustam Khabilov
Henderson (20-3-0, 8 submissions) edged out a close split-decision during his last outing against Josh Thomson, and he’ll be in for another tough contest when he squares up against Rustam. Khabilov (17-1-0, 5 submissions) hasn’t tasted defeat in over three years, and he’s 3-0 so far in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
However, he’s never faced anyone close to Henderson’s level in his MMA career.
The striking exchanges between the two should be even, but Bendo’s wrestling should be enough to overcome Khabilov’s sambo.
Prediction: Henderson wins via decision.
Diego Sanchez vs. Ross Pearson
What could be better? A fight between a British brawler who loves nothing better than a solid standup battle and an American whose typical game plan is “forward, forward, forward, yes, yes, yes!”
Expect fireworks when these two collide at UFC Fight Night 42.
Off course, Sanchez (24-7-0, 9 submissions) would be better off trying to use his wrestling to grind out Pearson (15-6-0, 5 KOs), but we all know that won’t happen. Besides, he might not be able to take Pearson down, even if he wanted to, given the Brit’s improved takedown defense.
More than likely, the majority of their fight will be contested standing up where Pearson is the superior MMA fighter.
Prediction: Pearson wins via decision.
John Dodson vs. John Moraga
This matchup also has the potential to be one of the most entertaining bouts at UFC Fight Night 42 as it features two of the best flyweights in the world.
Dodson (15-6-0, 7 KOs) should have the advantage striking wise, but he might find himself in a world of trouble if Moraga (14-2-0, 6 submissions) is able to drag him to the canvas.
That probably won’t happen given Dodson’s top-notch takedown defense though.
Dodson won via unanimous decision during the first tilt between these two, and I expect him to turn in an even more dominant performance come this time around.
Prediction: Dodson wins via KO.
