Kelvin Gastelum missed weight by a whopping ten pounds at the UFC 183 official weigh in.
Questions remain unanswered about his pre-fight preparation, but Tyron Woodley did pinpoint some of his fighting limitations in this three-round co-featured attraction.
In the first round of this UFC 183 bout, Kelvin Gastelum and Tyron Woodley fought on even terms, with both men using their jabs, short kicks, and boxing techniques. Gastelum landed more, but neither man really pressed the other to fight outside of their basic arsenal.
To some extent, round two strayed from those realities. Both men landed hard strikes, but it was Woodley who really made his impact with swift kicks and flush counter punches.
Round three returned to the sluggish tempo one may expect from a finesse-fighter and out-of-shape slugger.
Gastelum held — a lot — and, when he did, Woodley pressed the fight to the cage and did some work from that position. He had quite clearly taken home a win at the sound of the final buzzer.
The judges scored the fight a split decision; 30-27, 29-28, and 28-29. Woodley was the winner, and rightfully so, as Kelvin Gastelum suffers his first career defeat.
