Coming off his close contest with current Ultimate Fighting Championship Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz at UFC 132, some MMA fans are wondering what comes next for Urijah Faber.
Faber formed a legion of MMA fans, during his reign as the WEC’s featherweight champion. Faber eventually lost the featherweight title to Mike Brown at WEC 36, the second loss of his MMA career. Since then Faber has lost three of his last six MMA fights.
During the time period Urijah Faber dominated the WEC’s featherweight division, Miguel Torres was doing the same thing in the bantamweight division. Torres dominated the bantamweight division for a few years, before losing his title to Brian Bowles at WEC 42.
Like Faber, Torres hasn’t quite been the same since the loss of his belt, losing two of his next four MMA fights. Given the fact both MMA fighters are finally in the same weight class, fans are hoping a fight between the two will be arranged in the future.
“He’s coming off a loss.” Torres said in an interview with ESPN.com. “I’m coming off a loss. He’s had four title shots since then. He lost twice to Mike Brown, to Jose Aldo and now to Dominick Cruz. I lost fights to one of his students [Joseph Benavidez] and Brian Bowles. All the momentum we both had, we kind of lost. That fight is still one fans want to see, but I think this fight a couple years ago would have been a lot bigger.”
I’m sure it’s a matter of time before UFC matchmakers put a fight between the two MMA veterans together. Luckily for the fans, the UFC’s new move to make all main event fights five round events will have kicked in by then, and followers of the sport will get to enjoy a championship style fight between two entertaining MMA fighters.
