Top five lightweight fighters in MMA right now

No Comment Yet

The lightweight division is one of the most explosive divisions in MMA. Not only are lightweight fighters entertaining to watch, the division is also stacked with many talented competitors. Here are the five best MMA fighters in the world right now:

1. Frankie Edgar

Not only did Edgar defeat UFC legend BJ Penn to win the promotions lightweight belt; he also successfully defended his belt against the Hawaiian MMA fighter. Edgar was even more impressive in his second title defense, surviving a brutal first round against Gray Maynard at UFC 125 and retaining his title.

2. Gray Maynard

Maynard wasn’t the most impressive specimen on the fifth season of the “Ultimate Fighter” reality series, but the 32 year old has certainly improved a lot over the years, turning into one of the top MMA fighters in the division.

3. Gilbert Melendez

The current Strikeforce middleweight champion, Melendez has certainly been impressive over the years. One thing preventing Melendez from being the top lightweight MMA fighter in the world is the fact he hasn’t faced the toughest competitors in the division yet. Many MMA fans expect Melendez to eventually end up in the UFC, and he should be successful once he gets there.

4. Eddie Alvarez

With a professional MMA record of 22-2, Alvarez has established himself as one of the top lightweight fighters in the world. Like Melendez, Alvarez has accomplished a lot in his MMA career and it’s about time he gets a spot in the UFC. Many would like to see Alvarez go against some of the top fighters in the UFC’s lightweight division.

5. Benson Henderson

Henderson has transitioned nicely into the UFC, winning his first two MMA fights in the promotion. Henderson was particularly impressive in his last outing; ending UFC veteran Jim Miller’s chances of a title shot. With 12 wins in his last 13 MMA fights, Henderson will probably have UFC gold around his waist someday.
