Two top strikers in the UFC’s welterweight division, Martin Kampmann and Thiago Alves will get it on when the promotion makes its return to Australia in 2012. The fight will be the main event of the “UFC on FX 2” fight card, set for March 3, 2012 at the Allphones Arena in Sidney, Australia.
Kampmann got his MMA career back on track with his last performance, snapping a two fight losing streak (both losses came via controversial decisions). Kampmann managed to get back on the winning side of things with his performance over Rick Story at UFC 139, walking away with the split decision.
Thiago also turned things around with his last performance, finishing UFC newcomer Papy Abedi with a rear-naked choke in the first round of their UFC 138 encounter.
Without a doubt, both MMA fighters will be highly motivated for their “UFC on FX 2” encounter, given the fact neither can afford a loss right now.
Thiago will be the bigger man coming to the fight, but he has struggled more in his recent fights. Prior to his UFC 138 win against Abedi, Thiago had lost three of his last four fights. Abedi had a lot of hype in the European MMA circuits coming into UFC 138, but most educated MMA fans knew he wasn’t quite ready for the top welterweights in the promotion. It was a good win for Alves, but he’ll need to do a lot more to get back into contention.
Both men are pretty even in the striking department, but Thiago does have more power in his strikes. Many talk about Kampmann’s top notch takedown defense, but few truly understand how skilled he is on the ground. Kampmann will have more ways to win the fight when the two meet inside the Octagon, and that might end up being the difference maker in the fight.
Regardless of who wins the encounter between the two, it should be nothing less that entertaining.
