Mark Muñoz Promises Fireworks Against Chris Weidman

Chael Sonnen is currently scheduled to get a title shot against Anderson Silva, but it could have just as easily been Mark Muñoz facing the sports’ pound-for-pound king at UFC 148.

Muñoz was initially scheduled to face Sonnen for the number one contender spot in the middleweight division at “UFC on Fox 2,” but an elbow injury forced him out of the bout. Muñoz ended up being replaced by Michael Bisping a few weeks before the fight, and the rest is now history.

Finally healthy and ready to fight, Muñoz will now face undefeated Chris Weidman at “UFC on Fuel TV 4,” and “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” plans to make a strong statement against the up and comer.

“Chris Weidman brings the fight, I bring the fight too,” Muñoz said during an appearance on UFC Tonight. “He’s got great jujitsu; he’s got great wrestling… I have the same thing. I think you’re going to see a fight where it’s going to be everywhere. I think it’s gonna be on the cage, it’s gonna be on the ground, it’s gonna be on our feet. But at the same time, you’re gonna see some fireworks from me. You gonna see some bombs fly from me. I know he’s gonna try to do the same thing. You’re gonna see a high-pace fight, it’s gonna be an entertaining fight, so don’t blink”

While Muñoz might not be the most popular fighter in the UFC’s middleweight division, he’s certainly one of the toughest. With wins in seven of his last eight fights, Mark Muñoz will be Weidman’s toughest test to date.

With an 8-0 record, Weidman’s future in the UFC looks bright, but I’m not sure he’s ready to face the very best in the division. He did defeat Damien Maia in his last appearance inside the Octagon, but I wasn’t particularly impressed with his performance (he did take the fight on very short notice).

I expect Weidman to put up a good fight against Muñoz at UFC on Fuel TV 4. But I don’t think he’ll be able to get past the Filipino Wrecking Machine when the two meet on July 11, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.
