Boxing veteran Abner Mares.

An exciting Doubleheader announced for August 24th at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California. The main headline of this Golden Boy Promotions show has undefeated three-division Abner Mares (26-0-1 14 KO’s) pitted against former titleholder Jhonny Gonzalez (54-8-0 46 KO’s).

Gonzalez isn’t supposed to win this fight. He lost a close-but-clear decision to Daniel Ponce De Leon last September on the undercard of Canelo-Lopez. Fortunately, he is back on track coming off back to back wins over journeyman in his native Mexico. It’s not meaningful in terms of career construction but is though confidence boosting.

Mares is coming off a stoppage win to Daniel Ponce De Leon. He’s gone 6-0 in his last six fights. Holding wins to Vic Darchinyan, Joseph Agbeko, Anselmo Moreno, and De Leon it is sure that Gonzalez isn’t something he hasn’t seen before. Can the spirit of Gonzalez triumph over the greatness of Mares?

The other fight on the main card is a toss up; this will be nothing like Mares-Gonzalez. Leo Santa Cruz is an extremely high volume punching super bantamweight. At age 24 he has already done more than most fighters have far though their physical prime.

The 30 year old Terrazas is much different. He picks his punches. Terrazas is very good at pacing himself and winning the fight with many big moments. This very game plan scored him the WBC Super Bantamweight title in two close decision wins over Cristian Mijares and Fernando Montiel. Can he fight past and defend his newly crowned WBC title against the younger Santa Cruz? Or will Santa Cruz add a second division title belt to his resume?
