After taking quite some time to figure out who his next opponent will be, former WBO welterweight champion, Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2), is finally ready to make his decision.
According to Top Rank promoter, Bob Arum, Manny will make an announcement on Sept. 13.
“We will know who he [Manny Pacquiao] is fighting,” Arum said during a conversation with the Manila Standard. “The date is December 8 and it’s going to be at the MGM Grand and we’ll know the opponent and everything is a done deal.”
Pacquiao’s next fight has already been set for Dec. 8, and rumors currently have Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1) as the man that’ll face the Filipino congressman.
“Two sources close to the negotiations, but unauthorized to speak publicly about the deal, told The Times Wednesday that Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 knockouts) will fight Marquez [on] Dec. 8 at [the] MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas after rejecting a rematch with Timothy Bradley,” the LA Times’ Lance Pugmire wrote about Pacquiao’s upcoming decision.
However, others like Boxingscene.com’s Rick Reeno insist Bradley is still in the mix.
I guess we’ll just have to wait for Pacquiao’s official announcement.
Given the fact that a fight against Juan Manuel Marquez is the more profitable option for Pacquiao, a fourth bout between the two does make a lot of sense. Some boxing fans seem to think that Marquez is the riskier alternative for Pacquiao, but that isn’t necessarily true.
Bradley could be just as dangerous in a rematch against Manny. “Desert Storm” injured his feet during the earlier rounds of their June 9 encounter, and he still managed to go the distance against Pacquiao.
Obviously, Pacquiao clearly won the bout (the judges awarded Bradley with a split-decision), but the fight wasn’t as one-sided as some made it out to be. Given the fact Bradley now knows what it feels like to be inside the ring with an elite fighter like Pacquiao, he’d probably perform a lot better in rematch.
Unfortunately for Bradley, his controversial victory against Pacquiao didn’t earn him any new fans. And he isn’t any more marketable than he was before their June 9 encounter, which makes Marquez the most logical choice for Pacquiao’s Dec. 8 fight.
