MMA veteran Jeff Monson has just signed a contract with the Strikeforce promotion. Monson will fight on Strikeforce’s scheduled June 18 event in Dallas, Texas. Monson is coming to the event as a replacement for Shane Del Rosario, who had to put his MMA career on hold due to injuries sustained in a car accident.

Strikeforce’s June 18 event will feature a showdown between current heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem, and the man that stopped Fedor Emelianenko’s reign, Fabricio Werdum.

Monson will now step in and face Daniel Cormier, who is currently undefeated in his MMA career. In his seven career MMA fights, Cormier has only gone to the judges’ scorecards once. Cormier can’t be too excited about the matchup though, given the fact that Monson is a well tested veteran that has competed in multiple MMA promotions all over the world. Monson is also on an eight fight winning streak, and his past experiences against many of the top fighters in the sport of MMA gives him an advantage.

For Monson, this will be his first time competing under the Zuffa banner, since his departure from the UFC in 2006. With Zuffa’s recent decision to extend the insurance coverage of all their MMA fighters, Monson will definitely want to make the best of his opportunity to compete under the most dominant organization in the sport of MMA.

For Cormier, He’ll have less than a month to prepare for what is clearly the toughest fight of his MMA career. Unfortunately for Cormier, all the training in the world probably won’t be able to prevent him from suffering his first loss in the sport of MMA. If Cormier manages to pull off the victory, the win will definitely raise his status as an MMA fighter and move him up the Strikeforce heavyweight rankings.

Regardless of what happens, the fight between Daniel Cormier and Jeff Monson should be another entertaining fight on Strikeforce’s June 18 fight card. With the main event featuring Overeem and Werdum, Strikeforce’s June 18 card should be another night of entertaining Mixed Martial Arts fights.
