Former boxing world champion Jeff Lacy wasted no time accepting MMA veteran fighter Nick Diaz’s challenge. Nick Diaz, who recently made his intentions to compete as a professional boxer known to MMA fans around the world, listed Lacy as someone he would be interested in fighting.
Not surprisingly, the former boxing champion was quick to accept the MMA fighter’s challenge. In a statement released by Lacy on April 18, the boxer said,
“Honestly, I was a little stunned. Nick has accomplished a great deal in mixed martial arts and is certainly one of the best in the sport. But getting in the ring with me for a boxing match is a path he needs to be very wary of taking. I’m willing to put it all on the line anytime, anywhere!”
Financially, a fight between Jeff Lacy and MMA bad boy Nick Diaz would be good for both fighters. Lacy is already established in the boxing world, and Diaz certainly has a lot of MMA fans who would pay to watch him box. As far has how competitive the fight would actually be? Diaz will have a tough time trying to beat the veteran boxer in his sport. Lacy has already faced some of the best fighters in the sport of boxing, and is not someone I would consider an ideal opponent for Diaz who has been focused on MMA for quite some time now.
I would rather see Diaz fight less experienced boxers, as he can definitely compete with those guys. That would seem like the smartest option, but Diaz seems bent on securing a boxing fight against a big name. A boxing match between MMA fighter Nick Diaz and boxer Jeff Lacy hasn’t been finalized yet, but from the way things are looking right now, a contract might be finalized rather quickly.
Regardless of whether I agree with Diaz on his decision to compete in boxing, I have to commend the controversial MMA fighter’s willingness to take a risk. In a sport where champions have been accused of dodging fights, Diaz seems to be looking for the toughest fight he can get, whether in boxing or MMA. One thing’s for sure, if Diaz manages to finalize the fight against Lacy, he will walk away with a bigger check than he has ever received in MMA.
