It may have taken her a slight bit longer than hoped — but Cris Cyborg fought past and beat down Female Featherweight rival Marloes Coenen in four rounds of a five round Ustream-broadcasted Invicta FC Featherweight title fight.
This was a classic strike-fest. Something that isn’t all that common in Women’s Mixed-Martial-Arts. Connen started out quickly, trying to pick Cyborg apart with sharp leg kicks and heavy punches to the head and body. This success was less than intimidating for Cyborg; who chopped through even the best shots Connen had to offer. By the middle rounds, Cyborg was picking her off at will — then the KO was only a matter of time.
This was a rematch of an exciting 2010 Strikeforce match up in which Cyborg got a run for her money against Connen — who was eventually broken down until she had nothing left to give. This was repeat; not revenge, as Connen hoped for. The packed Featherweight division now has many opened doors for Cyborg. Maybe after a few defenses of her new Invicta title she can head to the UFC and face the winner of the Bantamweight title fight between Miesha Tate and arm-snatcher Ronda Rousey.
Either way, Cyborg has shed light on the women’s MMA picture. With this win she has returned from a 14 month break from the sport.
