Five most underrated fighters in MMA right now

Like all other sports, MMA certainly has its share of underrated fighters that never seem to get any credit for their accomplishments. Even though some of these fighters are not popular with casual fans of the sport, hardcore MMA followers are familiar with their names. Here are the top five most underrated fighters in MMA right now.

1. Gilbert Melendez

With a professional MMA record of 19-2, most casual MMA fans wouldn’t recognize Melendez if they bumped into him at the grocer. Melendez has already defended his Strikeforce title multiple times and a move to the UFC is probably in his future. Maybe, under the UFC’s bright lights, he’ll finally start getting the recognition he deserves.

2. Jon Fitch

With only one loss to current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre in almost a decade, Fitch is clearly the most underrated fighter in the UFC. The fact that Fitch’s last eight wins have come by decision, isn’t going to make him a fan favorite in the UFC. Then again, GSP has won five of his last six MMA fights by decision and UFC fans still have a lot of love for him.

3. Alistair Overeem

Even though the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion has dominated every MMA fighter he has faced in the past four years, many refuse to acknowledge his many accomplishments inside the cage. Fabricio Werdum is the only MMA fighter to get past the first round against Overeem in his last ten fights. With Overeem’s recent signing with the UFC, he’ll probably start getting some respect once he demolishes a few big-names inside the Octagon.

4. Eddie Alvarez

At 22-2, Alvarez is certainly one of the best lightweights in the world right now. Unfortunately for the Bellator lightweight champion, he probably won’t be getting the respect he deserves until he earns himself a deal with the UFC.

5. Cung Le

Between the acting, and his unorthodox striking style, many have forgotten that Le is a legitimate MMA fighter. Le dominated kickboxing tournaments for years, before finally deciding to give MMA a try. With the former Strikeforce middleweight champion’s addition to the UFC 139 fight card, Le will finally get to showcase his world-class kickboxing skills against a highly respected opponent.
