Former WBA super world light welterweight champion, Amir Khan, was hoping for a December rematch against undefeated Danny Garcia, but "Swift" has plans of his own. Instead of giving Khan a rematch, Garcia will defend his WBA and WBC light welterweight titles against Erik Morales on Oct. 20. The two will headline a Showtime-televised fight card called "Brooklyn Pride."
"I really wanted to put together a card that shows the diversity of Brooklyn, and to really showcase some of those fighters from and around the Brooklyn and greater New York area, so it's basically an East Coast card," Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, said during an interview with RingTV.com. "The main event is going to be Danny Garcia, obviously the Puerto Rican from Philadelphia, and Erik Morales, the Mexican. Erik feels that in his last fight, that when he came off of [gall bladder] surgery, that he wasn't at his best. He's convinced that he's going to beat Danny Garcia this time around, and you have the classic Puerto Rican-Mexican showdown."
Other boxers expected to be on the "Brooklyn Pride" fight card include Peter Quillin, Paulie Malignaggi, and Danny Jacobs.
Given how decisive Garcia's win against Erik Morales was, a rematch between the two doesn't really make any sense. Sure, Morales had his moments during the fight, but Danny Garcia was clearly the better boxer inside the ring. When one considers the fact that Garcia is 24 years-old, while Morales is 35, it's hard to see "El Terrible" doing any better in the rematch.
I personally would have rather watched a rematch between Khan and Garcia. The Puerto Rican did stop Khan in the fourth round, but the Brit was actually controlling the action until he got caught in the third round. If Khan had been more composed inside the ring, things could have turned out differently.
