MMA veteran Kenny “Kenflo” Florian will probably be next in line to fight current UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo. Florian was successful in his featherweight debut, earning a unanimous decision against top featherweight fighter Diego Nunes.
After his win at UFC 131, UFC President Dana White told reporters Florian would probably be next in line for the featherweight title.
Some fans feel undefeated MMA fighter Chad Mendes should be next in line for the title shot, but those who have followed Florian over the years understand why he deserves to fight the champion. Even though Mendes is undefeated, he is yet to face any serious contender in the sport. Kenflo has already battled MMA legends like BJ Penn, and he also has wins over many reputable fighters like Takanori Gomi, Clay Guida, and Joe Lauzon, just to name a few.
Given his many accomplishments in the Octagon, Florian definitely earned his top contender status in the UFC’s welterweight division. For anyone to now say Florian isn’t deserving of a title shot at a lower weight class is simply ignorant.
After Florian’s win over Nunes at UFC 131, the 35 year old MMA fighter spoke to reporters about his future plans:
“I’m staying at featherweight. I want shot at the belt. I think Jose is one of the best in the game. I have a lot of respect for him, and I’m a big fan, every UFC fighter’s dream is to be a champion. I don’t want to look too far ahead, but that’s [my goal].”
Florian definitely has the tools needed to defeat the UFC’s current featherweight champion. Kenny’s kickboxing is top notch, and he shouldn’t have any problems trading blows with the current champion. Florian’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is also world class, and it will be interesting to see which MMA fighter has the advantage on the ground since both are pretty good in that department.
An MMA fight between Florian and Aldo would be a big draw for the UFC, and I have a funny feeling Kenny will finally realize his long-time dream of becoming a UFC title holder.
