Chris Weidman Lashes Out at Anderson Silva

Chris Weidman put on the performance of his MMA career during his last outing against Mark Muñoz, manhandling “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” throughout their “UFC on Fuel TV 4” encounter. With the win, many MMA fans are hoping to see the undefeated rising star take on current middleweight champion Anderson Silva next, but “The Spider’s” handlers don’t seem interested in the matchup.

Jorge Guimaraes – one of Silva’s managers – recently stated that the only fight that makes sense for his client right now is a super-fight against Georges St Pierre, referring to Weidman and others in the current middleweight title mix as “amateur kids.”

Obviously, Chris Weidman wasn’t happy with Guimaraes’s comments, and he fired back during an interview with

“I have nothing but respect for Anderson Silva, and I would expect him to want to fight the best guy and the guy who’s going to give him the toughest challenge,” Weidman said. “The guy’s a champion of 185 [pounds], he should be fighting the contenders. You don’t call out guys that aren’t going to be able to fight forever and guys that are lighter than you. Why don’t you call out Jon Jones? That makes sense, I’m sure a lot of people would watch, I’d love to watch too. If you’re not going to fight him, fight me, I’m ready to go.”

In terms of Silva being willing to fight GSP and not Jones, Weidman certainly makes a valid point, considering the fact a Silva-GSP fight wouldn’t be fair on the welterweight champion, the same way fighting “Bones” isn’t fair on the Brazilian.

However, I don’t think Weidman has done enough to secure a shot at the middleweight title. Sure he looked awesome in his last outing against Muñoz, but he wasn’t that impressive in his fight against Damien Maia (to be fair, he did take the fight on very short notice). A Weidman vs. Silva fight would be a tough sell for the UFC, and it’ll make more sense to make him wait and fight the winner of the Michael Bisping vs. Brian Stann matchup before putting him inside the cage against Silva.
