Former World Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (46-1-1 32 KO’s) has reportedly sustained a cut on his left eyelid during his training camp in preparations for a September 7th Super Middleweight fight against durable Texan Brian Vera. The fight has been postponed to an undisclosed date later this fall.
The 27-year-old son of a legend hasn’t fought ever since suffering a nearly one sided unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Argentinian Middleweight Champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (52-2-2 28 KO’s). Chavez has since fallen through a number of fight cancellations on route to this twelve-month hiatus.
Chavez Jr won the WBC Middleweight title in a close twelve round victory over Sebastian Zbik back in June of 2011. He held onto the title through three defenses against contenders Marco Antonio Rubio, Peter Manfredo Jr, and Andy Lee. He’s set sights on the top of the Super Middleweight picture.
Brian Vera (23-6-0 14 KO’s), a 31 year old fan favorite, is on a four fight winning streak. The Fort Worth boxer usually competes at Middleweight, although he isn’t hesitant about coasting from 154lbs up to 168lbs — where this fight is expected to be contested (upon rescheduling).
The entire card, including the much anticipated WBO Light Middleweight title fight between Vanes Martirosyan (33-0-1 21 KO’s) and Demetrius Andrade (19-0-0 13 KO’s), has been cancelled and is tabbed to be rescheduled. It is not yet known how much of the undercard will be paired with the main event. It will be released as the new date becomes known.
Tickets will be refunded to all who purchased them. The fight card was supposed to be televised by HBO and take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
