The UFC wisely offered a new deal to up and coming MMA fighter Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira. Oliveira is currently coming off a devastating first round loss to Donald Cerrone at “UFC Live 5.” Some questioned the 21-year-old MMA fighter’s job security, given the UFC’s knack for quick cuts. Oliveira is now guaranteed four more fights in the UFC, and the contract should be finalized shortly.
With his devastating loss to Cerrone at “UFC Live 5,” Oliveira is now considering a drop to the promotion’s featherweight division.
According to Oliveira’s manager Wade Hampel, the lightweight fighter will cut down to 145 lbs for a week to see how the new weight feels. If Oliveira feels fine at 145 lbs, his next MMA fight might very well be in the featherweight division.
Given his physique, Oliveira should be able to make the cut to 145 lbs without too many problems. However, it might not be the best move for the up and coming MMA fighter, who added 4 inches to his height within the past year.
With wins against tough MMA fighters like “Ultimate Fighter” season eight winner Efrain Escudero, and Darren Elkins, Oliveira has already proven he can hold his own in the UFC’s lightweight division. Oliveira put together an impressive 14-0 MMA record by the age of twenty, earning himself the respect of many UFC fans. Oliveira’s only losses have been against two of the UFC lightweight division’s best fighters, Jim Miller, and Cerrone.
Oliveira would be better off staying in the lightweight division as his body continues to grow. As time passes by, he’ll gradually evolve into one of the bigger MMA fighters in the division. Size wasn’t really the reason Oliveira lost to Miller or Cerrone, the Brazilian just didn’t have the experience needed to deal with such seasoned MMA fighters.
