Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more crazy in the UFC, crazier stuff happens.
MMA’s number one trash talker, Chael Sonnen, has failed a random drug test heading into his July 5 fight against Vitor Belfort, becoming the third high profile UFC fighter to test positive for banned substances in a span of a few weeks.
Wanderlei Silva lost his opportunity to fight Chael when he ducked random testing, and Vitor has had problems of his own lately regarding drug tests.
This isn’t the first time Chael Sonnen has been busted for PEDs though. He turned himself into one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s most marketable stars thanks to an elevated-testosterone-levels fuelled grinding assault on then middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117.
Of course, like most MMA fighters whose test samples showed unnaturally high testosterone levels, Sonnen claimed he suffers from hypogodanism. He eventually got a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy, which he took full advantage of until the Nevada State Athletic Commission elected to stop issuing TRT exemptions.
It’s really not that surprising that Chael Sonnen and others who enjoyed MMA’s TRT golden age are now having a hard time passing drug tests.
Sonnen received little more than a slap on the wrist for his first infraction, so it’ll be interesting to see if things are any different this time around given the larger role Chael now plays representing the UFC’s brand.
