Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit plans to give current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre the fight of his life, when the two MMA fighters meet inside the Octagon at UFC 137, set for Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“I’ve watched Georges for a really long time,” Condit said in an interview with HDNet’s Bas Rutten and Kenny Rice. “I’ve looked up to him as a fighter, and admired what he’s done for the sport. Just having the opportunity to fight Georges is a huge honor for me, and I feel like it couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m as focused as I’ve ever been, and I’m the best Carlos Condit that I’ve been and probably will be. I expect to do well…I’m as ready as I’ve ever been”
GSP was originally scheduled to fight former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz at UFC 137, but Condit was given the opportunity after Diaz failed to show up for consecutive press conferences.
Casual MMA fans might expect GSP to walk through Condit, but hardcore followers of the sport expect a much tougher fight.
Condit is the better finisher between the two MMA fighters, with 26 of his 27 career wins coming via some form of knockout or submission. Condit was particularly vicious in his last MMA fight, handing then unbeaten Korean fighter Dong Hyun Kim a first round TKO loss.
GSP is the exact opposite of Condit, with a majority of his 22 wins as a professional MMA fighter coming via decision. GSP hasn’t been able to finish a fight in over two years, and Condit will have 25 minutes to find the UFC welterweight champion’s chin or lock up a submission. Condit is equally good at doing both, and GSP will have to be extra cautious against the “Natural Born Killer.”
Nick Diaz might have done the UFC a favor, as the MMA fight between GSP and Condit should be something to remember. It should be an all out war, and the UFC welterweight champion’s chin will be put to the test.
