Bob Arum Thinks TMT Promotions Will Be Good for Boxing

Even though some in the boxing community – like Oscar De La Hoya – weren’t really thrilled about 50 Cent’s entry into the industry, Top Rank promoter, Bob Arum, seems enthusiastic about The Money Team (TMT) Promotions.

Surprisingly, Arum feels that a super-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao would be a lot easier to organize if “Money” fights under TMT Promotion’s banner.

“I would think that if [50 Cent] promoted Floyd, then it would make a matchup between Pacquiao and Mayweather that much easier,” Arum said during a recent interview. “You would have somebody that is a friend and a mentor that he can rely on and they would protect his interests in any kind of promotion, and I would be on the side of Pacquiao. … I think that it would work wonderfully. In other words, I’m not looking to be the only promoter here because that might be very awkward. But certainly in a deal where Mayweather had his own promotional company and Pacquiao his own, being us, I think that it would work splendidly.”

Bob Arum has said many things about a potential Mayweather-Pacquiao fight over the years, so it’s hard to take anything he says seriously. Even though he continues to talk as if he truly wants to set up a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao, Arum’s actions have never really matched his words in the past.

If Pacquiao and Arum had agreed to take a drug test back in 2009 – something that is required of all professional athletes and many regular nine-to-fivers – a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would have happened back then. Yet, Arum came out with a number of excuses. And he didn’t fare any better during the last round of negotiations, coming up with a fresh new batch of excuses that included everything from needing extra time for a cut suffered against Juan Manuel Marquez to heal, to the MGM Grand not being big enough for the fight.

Hopefully, Pacquiao truly wants a piece of Mayweather this time around, but I refuse to hold my breath.
