Rising UFC welterweight Carlos Condit will get to face MMA legend BJ Penn in his next appearance inside the Octagon. Condit has been on a tear in the past several years, winning 12 out of 13 MMA fights since 2006.
Condit reached out to Penn on July 11, asking for the MMA fight via Twitter.
“The people have spoken,” Condit tweeted. “They want to see us scrap. Let’s give ’em what they asked for.”
BJ Penn didn’t hesitate at the opportunity to fight the rising MMA fighter, sending out a reply ten minutes later.
“Yup. Let’s do it! October 29th.”
Sources close to the UFC later confirmed to ESPN that the fight between the two MMA fighters is likely to happen, and the bout should be official in the near future.
In his last performance inside the Octagon, Condit brutally knocked Dong Hyun Kim out, handing the South Korean MMA fighter the first loss of his career.
A win over a solid MMA fighter like BJ Penn should be enough to get Condit a shot at the UFC’s welterweight title. Penn is currently coming off a draw against former welterweight number one contender Jon Fitch at UFC 127, and the 32 year old MMA fighter also hopes to earn another shot at the welterweight championship.
Penn is definitely a level above any opponent Condit has faced in the past, and it will be interesting to see how Carlos handles the second UFC fighter to win titles in two different divisions.
MMA fans should be in for a real treat when these two fighters meet inside the Octagon. It will be interesting to see if Penn decides to stand with Condit or use his grappling skills. If Penn shows up in shape and ready to fight, Condit will be in for a long night.
