Biggest Winners and Losers From UFC on Fox 8

UFC on Fox 8 had a few controversial decisions and boring fights, but it was still an entertaining card. Some fighters significantly improved their standings with the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s brass with their performances, while others might as well start looking for new gigs.

Here are the biggest winners and losers from the UFC on Fox 8 fight card held on July 27 at the Key Arena in Seattle, Wash.:

1. Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson

DJ, once again, proved he is the best flyweight in MMA at UFC on Fox 8, dominating a vast majority of his encounter against the always-game John Moraga. When the challenger caught Johnson flush with a right hook during the fourth round and busted up his nose, Mighty Mouse took the hit like a true champ. Bloody nose and all, he continued to dominate the fight during the fifth round, eventually bringing their title tilt to an end via armbar.

2. Robbie “Ruthless” Lawler

Lawler put on an excellent show against Bobby Voelker, dominating their bout from start to finish. Robbie was his usual aggressive self at UFC on Fox 8, but it was his crisp boxing, particularly his counters and ability to cut off the cage, that really stood out. Lawler brutalized Voelker with hard punches during the first round, and he put him away with a vicious head kick 24 seconds into the second round.

With the impressive showing, Robbie made it clear he’s a force to be reckoned with in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight division, and a couple more wins should earn him a shot at the 170-pound division’s strap.

3. Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard

Guillard has had his share of struggles inside the Octagon lately, but “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 2 alumni made a strong statement at UFC on Fox 8, brutally knocking out Mac Danzig during the second round of their bout. Melvin’s striking looked awesome as ever, so did his takedown defense, and he managed to stay composed the few times things weren’t going his way during the fight.

Notable mentions: Rory MacDonald, Liz Carmouche, Jorge Masvidal, and Germaine de Randamie.

1. Jake “The Juggernaut” Ellenberger

Jake showed up at UFC on Fox 8, but The Juggernaut was nowhere to be found. He barely engaged during the first two rounds, allowing MacDonald to work his jab with ease. When Jake finally increased his output during the final round, he managed to turn the tide, landing a few hard shots and putting Rory on his back. Unfortunately, for Jake, it wasn’t enough to make up for the poor showing during the first two rounds, and all three Octagon-side judges gave Rory the nod.

2. John “Prince” Albert

Albert got off to a decent start at UFC on Fox 8, and he came close to finishing the fight with a triangle choke during the second round. However, fatigue pretty much got the best of him as he basically let go of what looked like a tight triangle choke during the second round, subsequently giving up his back, tapping out to a rear-naked choke shortly after.

Albert has now lost four fights in a row, which makes him a likely candidate for the UFC’s next round of cuts.

3. Michael “Maverick” Chiesa

Chiesa looked awesome during the first round of his UFC on Fox 8 encounter against Jorge Masvidal, but the latter took over the fight during the second round. Michael probably would have been able to turn things around during the final round, but he ended up tapping to a guillotine choke with a second left in round two, bringing an end to his undefeated record.
