Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar will face former Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem on Dec 30. 2011. The MMA fight will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, and it’ll be Overeem’s first fight in the UFC.

“Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem, Friday, Dec. 30 in Las Vegas,” UFC president Dana White tweeted on Sept. 6, confirming the matchup between the two popular heavyweights.

The fight between Overeem and Lesnar is scheduled to be the main event of the UFC’s end of the year show, making it a five round contest. The winner of the match will be next in line for a shot at the UFC’s heavyweight title.

“Brock is a big name, a dangerous guy, and this is a dream matchup,” Overeem said in an interview with the L.A. Times after the news was announced. “Brock’s a big guy, an exciting wrestler with his takedowns.”

The UFC certainly deserves a lot of credit for making this matchup up possible. After Overeem and Zuffa officials bumped heads about the proposed Sept. 10 date for the semi-finals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, many MMA fans thought the relationship was over. Yet, cooler heads finally prevailed, and the UFC will now have another one of the top 5 heavyweights in MMA fighting under their banner.

Overeem and Lesnar match up very well stylistically. Overeem is a highly skilled kick-boxer who uses his enormous size and strength during his MMA fights. Lesnar on the other hand, is a top-notch wrestler, whose size also plays a role in his success in MMA. Overeem is currently the favorite with the oddsmakers, but I’m sure the odds will even out with time.

When these two giants collide inside the Octagon, MMA fans will be in for a treat. Whoever dictates where the MMA fight takes place, will be the number one contender in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
