Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has done everything in his power to avoid a May 5 super-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, constantly changing excuses and pushing hardcore boxing fans away.
Like many others, rapper 50 cent (Mayweather’s close friend) isn’t buying Arum’s stories, and the Grammy winning entertainer took a jab at Pacquiao during the International Consumer Electronics Show.
“We’re trying to bring some attention to the general public about Pacquiao because he’s running scared right now. 50 Cent said. “We’re looking for him right now… May 5th, so if you see somebody who knows him, say, ‘Why’s your man scared? He don’t wanna fight May 5th, 50 was talking about him at the CES convention.'”
Before Mayweather’s jail sentence was delayed, Arum sought a May fight for Pacquiao, eyeing Juan Manuel Marquez in particular. When Arum learned Mayweather would be available in May after all, the excuses started to flow.
Arum initially said Pacquiao wouldn’t be able to fight because of a cut suffered against Marquez, but boxing fans weren’t buying it. Arum then came up with some new excuses, claiming May 5th wouldn’t be a profitable date and offering to hold the fight in June.
“Why would I tell Manny to fight on the 5th and throw away a percentage of 30 million? That’s crazy,” Arum said.
“We’re fighting in June, one of the four guys,” Arum told ESPN.com. “My mission is to go over to the Philippines and talk about these four guys. If Manny feels he wants to go in May, he will tell me. I want to make sure Manny’s cuts are healed. We won’t fall under this kind of pressure. June is much more likely for Manny’s fight, not May.”
At this point, it’s pretty obvious Arum has no desire to put Pacquiao in the ring with Mayweather. Arum and his number one client seem content to play ‘good cop, bad cop,’ where Pacquiao keeps insisting he wants to fight Mayweather, and Arum does everything in his power to make sure the fight never happens.
